A New Medical Clinic Building for Hornby Island

Floor Plan

Page updated 31 January 2011

Sketch by Michael McNamara, as of January 2010. North is to the top of the drawing - the entrance faces south.

The floor area of this building is 2053 sq. ft., which is about twice the size of the Doris Savoie building which is presently in use. There is a basic division between the secure and the public use areas of the clinic.

As you enter the building through John Grunwald's classic new door, you face the reception desk, so your entrance will be noticed. (In the present building the receptionist cannot see the front door.)

As you step inside, you will see a door on the left which isolates the secure sector from the public area which is on the right. The public use area includes a spacious seating area, a multi-purpose room and a washroom. The LifeLabs technician who takes samples on Thursday mornings will use the multi-purpose room. (In the present building patients whose samples are being taken must go through the recepion office which contains the secure fax machine and the patient files.) The multi-purpose room is also available for other uses, which may be a staff lunch room or a meeting room. In the past there have been other visiting practitioners such as physiotheerapists who have used the spare room in the present building.

The reception office and the left (western) half of the building are the secure area, which can be isolated by locking two doors. Medical staff can enter or leave out the back door from the secure area. There are now two patient interview rooms, whereas in the present building the doctors' office is also the interview room. The treament room is sized to hold two hospital beds with adequate room to work around them. The treament room is also accessible to an ambualnce or other vehicle.

The layout of the building has been based on months of discussion between island architects, builders and physicians, and with input from VIHA, the Vancouver Island Health Authority. There have been regular reports on the progress at public meetings and via the First Edition.

Two rooms have been designated as storage areas, but the crawl space is also available. The building is built on bedrock with a solid concrete perimeter wall, and headroom ranging from 18" at the west end to 5' at the east end. The crawl space floor has been consolidated by a layer of concrete.
